The original census included columns for persons aged 80-90 years,
90-100 years and "100 and upwards." No persons enumerated in Livingston County
in 1840 were older than 79 years so those columns are not shown in this
file. Columns corresponding to ten age groups are included here -- ten columns
for males and ten for females.

When the 1840 census was taken, Livingston County proper consisted of five townships:
Jackson, Greene, Monroe, Grand River and Chillicothe.
Lands extending north to the state line were "attached" to Livingston
and later became Grundy and Mercer counties. In 1840 they consisted of
Washington, Morgan, Marion, Madison, Jefferson and Franklin townships. Those
townships are not included here.
