When the 1840 census was taken, Livingston County proper consisted of five townships: Jackson, Greene, Monroe, Grand River and Chillicothe.
Lands extending north to the state line were "attached" to Livingston and later became Grundy and Mercer counties. In 1840 they consisted of Washington, Morgan, Marion, Madison, Jefferson and Franklin townships. Those townships are not included here.
