(1) Jerry Broaddus, Chillicothe, Missouri.
Born February 5, 1893. Son of Joseph and Jessie Broaddus. Entered 15th
Depot Brigade as Private at Camp Dodge, Iowa, May 28, 1918; transferred
to 27th Depot Brigade and promoted to Corporal about August 1, 1918. Died
October 15, 1918, at Camp Dodge base hospital from bronchial pneumonia.
(2) Lester C. Burgard, Avalon, Missouri.
Son of Samuel H. and Charity E. Burgard. Corporal Co. I, 139th Infantry,
35th Division. Entered service at Chillicothe, Missouri, August 5, 1917; sent
to Camp Clark, Nevada, Missouri, August 13, 1917; transferred to Camp
Doniphan, Oklahoma, November 26, 1917; transferred to Camp Mills, New York,
in April, 1918; sailed April 25, 1918. Served with Co. I on Weserling
Sector in Vosges Mountains from July 19, 1918, for about thirty days; held
as reserve in the St. Mihiel offensive September 12-16, 1918. Entered the
battle of the Argonne Forest September 26, 1918, where he was killed in
action September 29. Buried with fallen comrades on battle field.
(3) Roy Burkett, Chillicothe, Missouri.
Born October 8, 1897. Son of Albert L. and Maggie Burkett. Corporal Co. I,
139th Infantry, 35th Division. Entered service at Chillicothe, Missouri,
August 5, 1917; sent to Camp Clark, Nevada, Missouri, August 13, 1917;
transferred to Camp Doniphan, Oklahoma, November 26, 1917; transferred to
Camp Mills, New York, in April, 1918; sailed April 25, 1918. Served with Co. I
on Weserling Sector in vosges Mountains from July 19, 1918, for about
thirty days; held as reserve in the St. Mihiel offensive September 12-16,
1918. Entered the battle of the Argonne Forest September 26, 1918, where he
was killed in action September 28, 1918, near Charpentry, France. Buried
where he fell.
(4) Everett Bryan, Utica, Missouri.
Born September 4, 1888. Son of William Columbus and Scottie Bell Bryan.
Private, Co. N, 22nd Engineers, 5th Battalion. Entered service at Defiance,
Ohio, June 24, 1918; sent to Camp Sherman, Ohio, for training; transferred
to Chillicothe, Ohio, to construct barracks; transferred to Fort Benjamin
Harrison, Indiana, to receive final training; sailed about September 20,
1918. Died of bronchial pneumonia aboard the U.S.S. Chandler, September 25,
1918.His body was brought back and interment was made in the family lot of
cemetery at Bethel Church near Ludlow, Missouri.
(5) John Francis Clevland, Bedford, Missouri.
Born October 27, 1891. Son of Alexander and Minnie Bell Clevland. Entered
service at Chillicothe, Missouri, September 19, 1917; sent to Camp Funston,
Kansas, September 20, 1917, and placed in Co. C, 156th Infantry; transferred
to Camp Kearney, Lindavista, California, October 31, 1917, to Co. L., 159th
Infantry, for Coast Guard duty. Here he contracted measles which developed
into pneumonia resulting in his death. He was brought to the home of his
parents in Bedford and interment was made in the family lot in the South
Wheeling cemetery.
(6) Vincent Eades, Chillicothe, Missouri.
Born October, 1888. Son of J. E. and Tempa Eades. Entered service at
Chillicothe, Missouri, September 9, 1918; sent to Camp McArthur, Texas,
September 9, 1918; transferred to Camp Merritt, New Jersey, September 19,
1918, for embarkation. Landed at Brest, France, October 9, 1918, and was
removed from the ship to the base hospital at Brest, where he died
October 15, 1918, of bronchial pneumonia and was buried at Lambzelic,
Fininstere cemetery.
(7) A. Morris Ellet, Chillicothe, Missouri.
Born September 9, 1886. Son of W. H. and Grace Ellet. Captain Co. I, 139th
Infantry, 35th Division. Entered service at Chillicothe, Missouri, August 5,
1917; sent to Camp Clark, Missouri, August 13, 1917; transferred to Camp
Doniphan, Oklahoma, November 26, 1917; transferred to Camp Mills, New
Jersey, in April, 1918; sailed April 25, 1918. Landed with men at Portsmouth,
England, May 9, 1918, where they were held for about two weeks. Sent on to
France and shortly after landing he was taken with mumps and removed to
hospital where he was kept several weeks at Dieppe, France. Rejoined his
regiment July 2, 1918, and took command of his company in Vosges Mountains.
Took company into trenches July 18, 1918, where this sector was held for
about thirty days. Killed August 8, 1918, as a result of an accidental
explosion of a hand grenade. Buried with military honors at Linthal Cemetery,
a French military cemetery. Captain Ellet was also in command of Co. I on
the Mexican border.
(8) Edward G. Gladieux, Chillicothe, Missouri.
Born November 20, 1895. Son of Joseph and Josephine Gladieux. Entered
Finance Department of Quartermasters Corps January 23, 1918, at Camp Joseph
E. Johnson, Florida, transferred to Camp Stanley, Texas, July 2, 1918;
transferred back to Camp Johnson October 15, 1918, to Officers Training
School, where he died October 29 of bronchial pneumonia.
(9) Vernon R. Glick, Chillicothe, Missouri.
Born September 20, 1891. Son of John A. and Isabelle Glick. Entered service
at Chillicothe, Missouri, August 5, 1917; sent to Camp Clark, Missouri, August
13, 1917, with Co. I; transferred to Camp Doniphan November 26, 1918;
transferred to Camp Mills, New York, April 18, 1918; sailed April 25, 1918.
Transferred to Officers' Training Camp at Langres, France, about June 30,
1918, where he remained until September 20, 1918. Upon learning that
Company I was to be thrown into the Meuse-Argonne Offensive on September 26,
he walked eight days in order to join his company against the enemy. He
had been with his company only a few hours when he was struck by enemy
shrapnel which caused immediate death. He was buried at Cheppy and later
moved to Argonne Cemetery. He also served in Company I with the 4th
Missouri Regiment on the Mexican border.
