(1) Eugene V. D. Goldsworthy, Chillicothe, Missouri.
Born June 10, 1894, at Springfield, Missouri. Son of A. L. and Sarah
Goldsworthy. Private in 313th Engineers, 88th Division. Entered service at
Chillicothe, Missouri, May 28, 1918; sent to Camp Dodge, Iowa, May 28,
1918, where he remained until August 6, 1918. Sailed from New York. Died
at Aracourt, France, October 29, 1918.
(2) William Franklin Herring, Hickory, Missouri.
Born April 22, 1895. Son of N. J. and Sarah Herring. Entered the service
at Chillicothe, Missouri, September 18, 1917, and was sent on the same day
to Camp Funston, Kansas, where he was assigned as Private to Co. C, 356th
Infantry, 89th Division. He remained here in training until February 28,
1918, when he was transferred to Camp Stuart, Virginia, and assigned as
Private to Co. L., 4th Infantry, 3rd Division. From this place he sailed
to France April 6, 1918, and served in the following engagements: Aisne
Defensive, May 27 - June 5, 1918; Champagne-Marne Defensive, July 15-18,
1918; Aisne-Marne Offensive, July 18 - August 6, 1918; St. Mihel Offensive,
September 12-16, 1918; Meuse-Argonne Offensive, September 26 - October 21,
1918. Killed in action October 21, 1918, and buried with his comrades on
the field of battle.
(3) Thomas Walter Hughes, Braymer, Missouri.
Born April 24, 1887. Son of William Jones and Dianna Hughes. Private in Co. L,
47th Infantry, 4th Division. Entered service at Cheyenne, Oklahoma, October
4, 1917; sent to Camp Travis, Texas, for training October 6, 1917; transferred
to Camp Greene, North Carolina, March, 1918; transferred to Camp Mills,
New York, May 1, 1918; sailed May 10, 1918. Killed in action October 5, 1918,
in the Battle of the Argonne Forest, and was buried with his comrades where
he fell.
(4) Glenn Humphreys, Sturges, Missouri.
Born July 21, 1894. Son of S. J. and Mollie Humphreys. Sergeant in Company C,
356th Infantry, 89th Division. Entered service at Camp Funston, Kansas,
August 19, 1917; sailed for France May 8, 1918. Killed at the battle of the
Meuse-Argonne, November 10, 1918, near Pouilly, France.
(5) Everett William Mann, Ludlow, Missouri.
Born August 6, 1892. Son of Mr. and Mrs. William Mann. In Company M, 349th
Infantry, 88th Division. Died at French-American Military Hospital at
Hericourt, France, of bronchial pneumonia, October 16, 1918.
(6) Reuben Claude McKiddy, Wheeling, Missouri.
Born October 14, 1898. Son of W. F. and Alice B. McKiddy. Private in Company
I, 139th Infantry, 35th Division. Entered service at Chillicothe, Missouri,
August 5, 1917; sent to Camp Clark August 13, 1917; transferred to Camp
Doniphan, Oklahoma, November 26, 1917. Died at Camp Doniphan December 31,
1917.
(7) George Ostrander, Chillicothe, Missouri.
Born September 4, 1890. Son of G. A. and Elizabeth Ostrander. Entered aviation
duty at Toledo, Ohio, October 24, 1917; sent to Kelly Field No. 8, San
Antonio, Texas, as Private in 148th Aero Squadron, November 8, 1917; transferred
to Camp Everson, Field No. 2, November 14, 1917; transferred to Field No. 3
at Benbrook, Texas, January 5, 1918; transferred to Field No. 1, Hicks,
Texas, January 24, 1918; transferred to New York February 19, 1918; sailed
February 25, 1918. Arrived in Liverpool, England, March 5, 1918. Transferred
to France and had moved up behind front lines and was preparing machine when
an enemy plane dropped a bomb wounding him, March 22, resulting in his death
March 24, 1918, at Rosiere, France, where he was buried. He was the first
Livingston Countian to sacrifice his life.
(8) Earl Smith, Chillicothe, Missouri.
Born June 30, 1892. Son of D. F. and Anna Smith. Private in Company B,
362nd Infantry. Entered service at Scolby, Montana, September 15, 1917;
sent to Camp Lewis, Washington, September 16, 1917; transferred to Camp
Mills, New York, March 6, 1918; sailed April 12, 1918. Wounded at Battle of
Argonne Forest September 20, 1918, and died October 8 at American Central
Hospital at Florides Meuse, France. Buried in American Military Cemetery
at Meuse, France.
(9) James H. Sparks, Avalon, Missouri.
Born February 3, 1890. Son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Sparks. Private in Company
I, 139th Infantry, 35th Division. Entered service at Chillicothe, Missouri,
August 5, 1917; sent to Camp Clark, Missouri, August 13, 1917; transferred
to Camp Doniphan, Oklahoma, November 26, 1917; transferred to Camp Mills,
New York, April 18, 1918; sailed April 25, 1918. Served at Wesserling Sector
from July 18, 1918, for about thirty days; in reserve at St. Mihiel Offensive
September 12-16, 1918. Entered the Battle of the Argonne Forest Sepember 26,
1918, where he was killed in action September 27, 1918. He was buried with
his fallen comrades.
(10) Delford E. Stephens, Bedford, Missouri.
Born March 18, 1894. Son of Michael and Sarah Stephens. Private in Company
L, 70th Infantry, 10th Division. Entered service at Chillicothe, Missouri,
July 25, 1918; sent to Camp Funston, Kansas, July 26, 1918. Sent to hospital
at Fort Riley with influenza, October 6, which developed into bronchial
pneumonia from which he died October 14, 1918. His body was brought to
Wheeling where interment was made in the family lot in South Wheeling
Cemetery.
