Nearly every family raised chickens. Chicks were kept in a wire enclosure
until old enough to forage on their own. Few people had permanent, enclosed
chicken yards. Poultry roamed freely in Mooresville.
The editor of The Breckenridge Bulletin published this item during the great depression -- "Our neighbor has solved the meat shortage problem. He has several box traps in his back yard and his family enjoys a rabbit dinner two or three times each week. We tried it but all we caught were the neighbor's chickens. Still, they tasted pretty good." |
