Martha Susan Hale was born February 29, 1832 in Giles County, Virginia, a daughter of Daniel Hale and Caroline Watts. Martha married William H. Shumate (1824 - 1888)
on May 15, 1850 in Giles Co., Virginia. William and Martha came to Livingston Co., Missouri in 1854. They lived north of Sampsel and had eleven known children.
Martha died July 9, 1912 in Sampsel Twp., Livingston Co., and is buried next to her husband in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Sampsel Twp.
