Henry Shumate's Barn

William Henry Shumate Jr. (1851 - 1930), son of William Henry Shumate and Martha Susan Hale, built this barn north of Sampsel. Family members referred to it as "Uncle Henry's barn." Henry had probably, at one time, thought he might live on that site. The barn was built close to the main road and the old home was further up the lane, across a creek and on the hillside. However, Henry didn't stay on the farm. . . he went pursuing a livelihood in the wheat fields of Kansas, Montana and Canada. This picture was taken in 1987; the barn is believed to have been torn down later.
