A small limestone quarry and lime kilns were in use on the Joseph Clark farm,
in Section 17, soon after the first settlers arrived. In 1885, the Hannibal
& St. Joseph Railroad leased and greatly expanded the operation in order
to ballast their roadbeds with gravel. The Clark quarry provided employment
to at least a dozen men from 1885 through 1897. Standing on the elevated rock are Louis Edmund Barron (1860-1948) and Stanford Newton Stout (1861-1938). |
