The land on which the Mooresville Christian Church now stands was previously
owned by Humphrey D. Hudgins (1832-1924). A Confederate veteran himself, Mr.
Hudgins originally intended that the property be used as a burial ground for
Confederate veterans and their families. The first two known burials, shown
here, were made long before the church was built. The grave on the left is that of Thomas Benton Maddux (1835-1865). Buried in the other grave is Lewis B. Comstock (1844-1864), son of Capt. Nehemiah Comstock. Both men were murdered because of their Confederate affiliation. Thomas B. Maddux and Lewis B. Comstock were half-brothers, their mother being Susan Rupe, born about 1810. |
