Jacob and his brother, John R. Stout, worked at an iron foundry in rural
New Jersey where both contracted lung diseases. In 1869 they bought a 160-acre
farm in Section 7, Mooresville Twp. John soon died but Jacob endured, building
a large two-story grout house 1/4 mile east of the Caldwell County line.
The home featured a hot air furnace in the basement and was the showplace
of the county. Reputed to be a big, muscular man, Jacob's tuberculosis
caused him to lose much weight before this photo was taken. Left to right-- Front row: Mrs. Lydia Ann Stout, Harry Stout, Jacob M. Stout. Standing: Elmer Stout, Castella Stout and husband Henry Colvin, Irving Stout. |
