On February 3, 1856, Jesse James comitted the first daylight bank robbery in peace time at liberty, Missouri. Greenup Bird was the bank's cashier. Greenup and his son William, also an employee of the bank, were put in the vault. The James gang escaped with approximately $60,000. Greenup's daughter, Mary Elizabeh Bird, was the wife of Missouri governor Alexander Monroe Dockery. Governor Dockery and Mary Bird were married April 14, 1869 at Chillicothe.
