The older obituaries include a handwritten date of publication. The actual date of death is included in the text of a few older obituaries and virtually all the newer obits, and the date of death is handwritten next to the obituary in a few cases. In some cases the date of death must be derived from a calendar. For example, consider the obituary of Bessie (Mrs. Harry) Abernathy. The obituary, published March 22, 1961, states that "[she] died Monday at a nursing home." Refer to a calendar for March, 1961. Calendar programs are available online and at leading software retailers. The calendar shows that the date of publication, March 22, was on Wednesday and the date of death was the preceding Monday, March 20, 1961.
