Nelson Harley SCARLETT was born on 16 November 1842 in Knox Co., Tennessee. He died on 25 December 1905 at the age of 63 in Breckenridge, Caldwell, Missouri. He was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Caldwell, Missouri. When quite young, he and his parents moved to Holt Co., Missouri. When nine years of age he was sent to sea with his uncle who was Captain on a sailing vessel, running from New York to European ports. After a few years he returned to his home in Holt Co. where he was employed on a cattle ranch. When the war broke out he joined the Confederate Army under Gen. Sterling Price. He also served under Gen. Albert Sidney Johnson as a courier. When the war closed he went to St. Louis and followed steam boating on the Mississippi for several years. During that same time he was a nurse at New Orleans during the smallpox epidemic. He studied for the ministry and joined the M. E. Church, South; he was sent as minister to Breckenridge in November, 1876. He bought the Breckenridge Bulletin in 1879, editing it until the Fall of 1880. He taught in the Trotter School in the Winter of 1881-1882 and in the Reed School in 1882- 1883. He then took up painting as a trade in the Winter of 1888 when he was lead poisoned. This disease was indirectly the cause of his death as he was never in good health since that time. He suffered a stroke of paralysis on December 10, 1905 and for nearly three months was totally helpless, not being able to move or speak.
