In August, 1865, he went to Breckenridge, Missouri, where he engaged in the hardware business and afterwards in farming, feeding and shipping livestock. He was a charter member of the Breckenridge Presbyterian Church, organized in 1866. He was a chief promoter of the Breckenridge lodge of the Grand Army of the Republic, Isam Keith Post No. 164, organized in January 1885. In 1893, after a hotly contested primary election, he was appointed postmaster of Breckenridge, which office he held four years.
