"Captain Ed Russel, of the U.S. Signal Corps, has recently made a great improvement to the signal service by discovering and perfecting a system by which telephone messages may be sent over a telegraph wire, one message not interfering with the other although both messages may be on the wire at the same time. To describe the system in detail would involve terms that but few could understand and is not therefore entered into here, but the improvement will prove invaluable in time, both in the army and in the commercial world. Captain Russel is a Caldwell county man, a brother of Sam Russel at Breckenridge. He has been in the army for many years and rendered distinguished service in the signal corps in the Philippine Islands where this improvement was thought out. When the captain was a young man he was often experimenting with telephone and telegraph systems and he probably installed the first telephones ever in Caldwell county when the line between Hamilton and Kingston was build, also three telephones that were in use in Hamilton. They were Bell telephones and before the use of separate transmitters and receivers was known." -- The Breckenridge Bulletin, May 15, 1903.
